about

If this hasn't happened to you, it will.

lyrics

She had a party on her 80th birthday. Drinking, dancing. She didn't refuse a single dance. Everyone had a big time. 'Cept maybe the band.

And two months later, she got the death sentence. Cancer.

Make a fist, and look at it. That's how big the tumor was in her gut. They gave her 6 months.

This was someone who gave you meaning. Looked at you, quiet, while you talked. Smiled quickly, all the time, and laughed a lot. Remembered your birthday, and always had a place for you to sit or sleep. Always, no matter how far away from home you had strayed.

The last time I saw her, she had taken to laying in bed all the time, but this time was different. She kept getting up, sitting on the edge of the bed. As if she had guests, or had to go somewhere.

I put her in the wheelchair, pushed her around the house. Parked her in front of a window, and the sun shone right on her. She rested there.

And three days later, and she rested forever.

And now that she's gone, it's like getting a tooth knocked out. Sharp pain at first, then you just can't keep your tongue from feeling out that new gap in your teeth. Eventually though, your tongue accepts it and forgets.
